Patrician one, new man the other… Rome’s First Men

Standing ovation in the senate well earned

The Eagle soared, but look now at your legacy

 

Madness, jealousy, Caesar: flamen dialis

Vestal virgins defiled… Jupiter Maximus

Withholds favorable augaries from the city

The Republic shrieks to its death throes, ‘Dictator!’

Imperium bestowed to the unworthy, who support your rivalry

Enter Caesar, enter Octavian. Princeps, imperator,

These words now twist in meaning, heralding autocracy.

‘Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo’… Catullus puts what you did quite well.

Hail to the barbarian Gaul; Liberty, Equality and Fraternity!

[Poem] To Reggie German

I’m sorry I made you read something sad

I guess there’s enough depression to be had

In this world, without deceptive Mcculkins

Luring the unwary to the world of Vulcans

 

Let’s sit in Tom Bombadil’s grove

Watching Sith and Jedi play  parcheesi

Moving to that old sage’s groove

And singing to his melody

 

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!Ring a dong! hop along! Fal lal the willow!Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!

The Eye of Sauron looks away scandalized

By old Tom’s joyous dance

Pack away our sorrows and drown it in the lake

While we imitate Ye Olde Bombadillo shake

Bring your family, bring your friends, let’s all dance

With Tom Bombadil, were sadness ain’t got no chance

 

I’m sorry for my unwitting reverse punchline in the previous poem, which I now realize, started with promises of a comic twist, but ended in dry sorrow. I was looking for an image that conveyed frozen shock, and utter disbelief. A home alone movie poster was the best I could find. I thank Reggie for bringing it to my attention.

Every full moon the elf would dance outside Tommy’s window, and every full moon Tommy would look at her for a moment, yawn and then close his window shades. She’d take different forms each time… a redhead, a blonde, a brunette, short, tall, an Amazon, a delicate debutante, a bearded man, a hairless Adonis… But she’d always get the same result.

She finally lost her temper, and…

[Poem] Ashvatthama (Mahabharata)

Ashvatthama, much maligned character

By shallow fools pretending to know him

Noble youth whose only tragic flaw was fear,

Filial duty and Destiny’s whim

 

Son of Drona, Destruction incarnate!

Can understand his reluctance to be

The agent of Death, to eviscerate!

The agent of balance… Why can’t you see

There the other side of duality?

 

He fulfilled his role despite reluctance

After friends murdered his father in cold blood

When Justice’s son made false utterance

Rage cast Ashvatthama’s ego to the mud.

 

Parabrahman flows beyond attribute.

 

 

 

[Poem] Suite: Judy Brown Eyes

You built a nest

My dear sparrow

While I walked ground hallow

In my pursuit of you

 

It was my test,

Dear Ruby-throat,

To swim in the shark moat

As my trunks came undone

 

I no longer remember, yesterdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. I only vaguely remember you…

Because now everyday is Friday and magic with Sir Christopher Lee and Rhapsody.

 

 

 

 

[Poem] Dawn

Dear one, I will tell you what I know

I will show you what the seed of death grew

I know that I know nothing now; although…

I know I must ponder infinitude

Just as the tree must reach tall for the sun

Never reaching there, never fulfilled… Yet

Enjoying the view of every dusk and dawn

 

Forget your worries a moment; sunset

Nears. Watch it with me. See its golden gown

Being lifted by the ocean.

 

Why explain

 

this beauty in terms scientific? Why

reduce its rays to plasma and Enlil spirals?

Leave that for other minds more inclined while we bask in its heat.
